Franciscan Living - Our Mission
Our Mission

We are a diverse community of pilgrims and seekers.

Rooted in the Franciscan tradition of Relationship with the earth and her creatures, we embrace all of life as gift.

With compassion and creativity, we nurture opportunities for consciously integrating the whole of human experience into the spiritual journey.

We reach out to those who are spiritually or religiously marginalized, especially by lifestyle or income.

During a twenty-five year career working as a pastoral minister in Roman Catholic Churches, eleven and a half of those years in Sacramento, California, our founder, Margie Will, a Sister of St. Francis, noticed a striking trend. While numbers of people inquired regarding affiliation with a parish, a significant percentage did not actually follow through. During follow up, when asked why they chose not to affiliate, many responded that while they appreciated the social, charitable, and ethical aspects of affiliation, they were not able to join the church due to difficulty with ecclesial stances on marriage, divorce, sexuality, role of women, and a variety of other teachings. A number expressed the wish that there could be a place that fostered community, outreach, and spiritual questioning that embraced a diversity of opinion and practice.

Franciscan Living, an independent 501(c)(3) organization for charitable purposes, was established in 2008. Our purpose is to identify, create, and promote opportunities for integrating the whole of human experience: body, soul, mind, and spirit.

Drawing on the ancient spiritual tradition of Francis and Clare of Assisi, who lived in consciousness of their relationship with the earth, the elements, the animals and all peoples, we nurture the development and deepening of a holistic vision and awareness of familial relationships within the entire cosmos.

Our interfaith Urban Center for Spirituality is located in the Midtown area of Sacramento, California. In this peaceful, safe, supportive, challenging, and creative space we offer seminars, classes, conversations, retreats, a peace garden, spiritual direction, art as meditation, body work, life coaching, support groups, dreamwork, and counseling to assist participants in deepening in awareness, mindfulness, compassion, connection and care for sufferings of humanity and the increasing fragility of our planet.

We welcome all, from the mainstream to the margins, who wish to journey with us and provide a sliding scale and scholarships to our events and programs for those who face financial hardship, especially, the homeless, disabled, elderly, and women.

Franciscan Living is led by a Board of Directors and the Executive Director who collaborate in determining policy, direction, and ongoing growth for our organization.

The Board is committed to spiritual inclusion, creative programming, excellence of service, and hospitable welcome to all who wish to participate in Center events and programs.

Core Values of the Board include: reverence for each person, respect and care for the environment, inclusion of diversity, compassion, dedication to peacemaking, and delivery of quality experiences to nurture the whole person.
